How much table width per person, how many people fit a 180 cm table, how much clearance a room needs, and the height numbers that make a table comfortable.
Most furniture regret is a measuring problem. The stone was right, the shape was right, and the table turned out to be eight centimetres too wide to walk past comfortably.
These are the numbers that prevent that. They are conventions rather than laws, but they are the ones rooms are built around.
How Much Table Width Does One Person Need?
Allow 60 cm of table edge per person. That is enough for a place setting and a glass without elbows meeting.
Below 55 cm people start apologising to each other. Above 70 cm the table begins to feel formal and conversation across it gets harder.
What Size Dining Table Do I Need for 6 People?
For a rectangular table, count the long sides and add the ends only if you will actually use them.
- 160 cm — comfortably 6 (three each side)
- 180–200 cm — 6 with room, or 8 at a squeeze
- 220–240 cm — 8 comfortably, 10 with the ends
Round tables seat differently because there are no corners to lose:
- 90 cm diameter — 4
- 120 cm — 4 comfortably, 6 close
- 150 cm — 6 comfortably, 8 close
Is a Round or Rectangular Table Better for a Small Room?
Round, usually. It has no corners to walk into, seats people more evenly, and reads as smaller than a rectangle of the same seating capacity. In a narrow room a rectangle is the better fit simply because it follows the shape of the space.
How Much Space Do I Need Around a Dining Table?
This is the number most people skip, and the one that ruins rooms.
Minimum 75 cm from the table edge to the nearest wall or furniture — just enough to pull a chair out and sit down.
90–100 cm if anyone needs to walk behind a seated person. Below that, someone has to stand up every time another person passes.
So a 180 cm table in a room needs roughly 180 + 200 = 380 cm of length to work properly. Measure the room before falling in love with a table.
What Height Should a Dining Table Be?
Standard dining height is 75 cm. Chair seats sit at 45–47 cm.
The relationship matters more than either number: you want 28–30 cm between the seat and the underside of the tabletop. Less and thighs meet the table; more and people eat with raised shoulders.
Stone tops are thicker than timber ones, so check the underside height rather than the top when pairing an existing chair with a new stone table.
What Size Coffee Table Fits My Sofa?
Three rules cover most living rooms:
Length: roughly two thirds of the sofa. A 220 cm sofa takes a table around 140–150 cm.
Distance: 40–45 cm between sofa and table. Close enough to reach a cup without leaning forward, far enough to get past.
Height: within about 5 cm of the sofa seat height, ideally level or slightly lower. A table taller than the seat looks and feels wrong.
What About a Low, Plinth-Style Coffee Table?
Low block forms sit deliberately below seat height and read as sculpture as much as furniture. They work best with deep, low sofas; against a high-seated formal sofa they can look stranded.
If the sofa seat is above 45 cm, stay closer to conventional coffee table height.
How High Should a Side Table Be?
Level with the arm of the chair or sofa it serves, or up to 5 cm below. Higher than the arm and it becomes an obstacle rather than a surface.
Typical useful range is 50–65 cm, but the arm is the reference, not the average.
How Do I Measure Properly Before Ordering?
Four steps, and the third is the one people skip.
- Measure the room, not the gap where the table will go
- Subtract the clearance — 75 cm minimum, 90–100 cm where people walk
- Tape the footprint on the floor and live with it for a day. Walk around it. Sit where the chairs will be
- Check the route in — doorways, stair turns, lift dimensions. Stone does not flex
Step four matters more with stone than with any other material. A table that cannot get up the stairs is a very expensive lesson.
Does a Made-to-Order Table Change These Numbers?
It removes the compromise. When the piece is cut for your order, the table can be the size the room actually wants rather than the nearest standard size a warehouse happens to stock.
